William H. Watkins was born in Harlem, New York and grew up in South Central Los Angeles, California. He brings a unique perspective to the world of education. His years fighting for social justice coupled with his trailblazing research, writing and critique of education in the United States informs audiences in an unforgettable, no holds barred manner. Professor Watkins challenges long standing beliefs about the system of education in the U.S. His research and writings weave us through the historical underpinnings of contemporary education. He is quoted and referenced in William F. Pinar's, "Understanding Curriculum: "Watkins outlines the major historical movements of black curriculum in the U.S. over the past three hundred years. He is a major scholar and theoretician in the contemporary field." William H. Watkins is lead editor of "Race and Education: The Roles of History and Society in Educating African American Students. " He is author of, "The White Architects of Black Education: Ideology and Power in America, 1865-1954." He is an Associate Professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago, teaching in the Department of Education. He has been published in numerous books and journals, some of which include the Harvard Educational Review, The International Journal of Social Education, and Urban Education. He has presented papers in Cuba, Canada, Thailand, the Netherlands, Japan, Africa and at numerous conferences across the United States. He speaks at universities and colleges across the country.
